Who Else thinks a Little Vanity is Good for You?

I'm not talking about the ultra narcissistic negative type of vanity.  I'm taking about the good healthy kind where you take regular showers, groom oneself, keep fit, and all around feel and look good.  I had to write about this because the recent nice weather we've had in mega sunny Seattle, WA has brought BBQ's and more times to socialize and in a few of these gatherings the topic of the "Dad Bod" has come up.  I first heard of this phrase on TMZ on TV a few months back and how Leonardo DiCaprio and a few other famous people had some seriously sexy "Dad bods."  Of course all the guys at the BBQ would pipe in saying how they were way ahead of the trend and belly jokes ensued. I'm not sure how the women felt, all they heard was Leonardo DiCaprio.  Damn that good looking guy.

The definition of Dad Bod by US student Mackenzie Pearson "a nice balance between a beer gut and working out."  "The dad bod says, 'I go to the gym occasionally, but I also drink heavily on the weekends and enjoy eating eight slices of pizza at a time.'  It's not an overweight guy, but it isn't one with washboard abs either."  This is supposed to be less threatening and comfortable to cuddle with?

What the heck?  I'm all for feeling comfortable in your own skin and all but this nation is not exactly known for its healthy lifestyles.  This fad (I hope it's a fad)  is just enabling people to keep guzzling that beer and finding excuses not to stay healthier.  I could write a huge article on the costs to society in economic terms for an unhealthy populace but that's for another time.  I preferred it when there was peer pressure to live a more healthy lifestyle.  At least the worst that could happen was someone hogging the tread mill for an hour.

So I think my level of vanity has shielded me from accepting this crazy fad.  I love to eat and party but not to excesses and if I happen to binge at a Vegas all you can buffet, you bet I'm hitting the gym hard the next day if not the same day.  I enjoy the feeling that my body will be healthy enough to keep up with all 3 of my crazy active children.  I am definitely not saying everyone has to have chiseled abs, far from it as my 1 pack abs will attest, but what I am saying is staying healthy and taking care of your body has so many benefits.

What are your thoughts?  I'd love to hear them.
