A lot of self help books say that it takes about 30 days to form a habit. This is more or less true; I think it really depends on the person and the habit that is trying to be formed. Really good positive habits usually take a lot of determination and planning, as GI Joe would say.. "starting is half the battle." If you want a better life why not start by challenging yourself to change some bad habits into good ones? Where or how do you want to be in the next 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years from now? Great habits will influence your lifestyle and your life.
Here are some great starter ideas for a 30 day challenge:
Take a 30 minute walk everyday
Well this is easy to do and a no-brainer for those couch potatoes out there. It is healthy, relaxing and is fun with family and friends.
Try a new recipe everyday
If you are not Bobby Flay, then you are probably like me who have angst trying to figure out what to cook for dinner. But in the routine of life you tend to stick with the same old foods that are easy to make and know off by heart. This is a great opportunity to perhaps start eating healthier and drop bad food habits for good ones.
Go cold turkey on booze and drugs for 30 days in a row
Do you grab a brew as soon as you get home? How about when watching TV? Or during a BBQ? Or puff a 420 on the porch? Can you have fun or relax without ingesting chemicals to alter your perception? This may be tougher than you think depending on your social circles.
Pick a topic and learn about it everyday.
Every successful person I know incorporates a time for study and learning each and everyday. Find a topic you like; study it everyday, plan it out and become passionate about it.
Stop using any form of Media for 30 days
This, I think, is incredibly hard. In this day and age of easy to access information, it is nearly impossible to not look at some news feed, pop up, info stream or social media site for longer than 2 seconds. I'm willing to bet that a large chunk of time will free up in your life if you do this one.
Pick a bad habit you already have and get rid of it for 30 days
Are and addicted gamer? Smoker? Fast food junkie? Do you nag constantly? Well now is the time to quit and replace those with something positive.
Keep a journal
This is a great way to remember and reflect on your life. My version of a journal is taking a picture of an activity I did each day to help me remember what I did. I have 3 kids and this puts a smile on my face every time I look back on my pictures.
Do something that scares you
Fear can be one of the biggest things that can hold you back from being the best version of you. Now is always the best time to overcome your fears.
I've only started doing this a few times a week and already I see the benefits. I find when the rat race of life gets too much, sometimes a little breather and meditation is the answer. Just take some quiet time for yourself and doesn't have to be long periods of time. You would be amazed what 5 minutes of gathering your thoughts alone will do.
Have fun and think of your challenges and lets make your life better!
