Apparently, there is no such thing as truly photographic memory, but some people are born with better than average memory which is called eidetic memory. It's not perfect like taking an actual photograph, but it's still amazing to see their recall ability. For the gold fish brained of us, there are mnemonic brain training techniques you can do to enhance your memory.
Our minds are more likely to remember the bizarre than the mundane and are great at processing spatial and visual data.. The Loci system works best with bizarre information. Use a mental image of an building such as your house that you know well. Visualize a series of locations in the place in logical order. For example, your path from your bedroom to the living room. As you enter each part of the house to get to the living room, place each item you want to remember at each room in your path. When you want to remember the items, just visualize your house and go through room by room in your mind. Each item you associated with each part of the house should trigger a memory.
Like the Loci system, this method depends on the fact that our brains are much likelier to remember the unusual. If you want to remember a list of items, make an interwoven unusual story in your mind. If your list includes pork, mayonnaise, paper plates, and soap. If may not remember your list, but you will remember a pig sliding down a mayonnaise slide on a paper plate and needing to clean off after with soap.
Dark Room Method
Grab a piece of paper with a cutout just big enough to fit a paragraph of text, also grab a book and find a dark room to sit in with the light switch within easy reach. Fit the piece of paper with the cutout to a page of the book so that it only exposes the paragraph you want to memorize. Hold those items in place at a comfortable distance that is easy for your eyes to focus. Turn off the light and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. Still looking at the paragraph, turn the light on and then quickly off again. The image of the paragraph should remain remain before your eyes. Practice this 15 minutes a day for a month and you may be able to impress your colleagues by your new ability to glance at an image and memorize it instantly.
